Not the 'sporty type'

Updated: Aug 30, 2021

A Body Story #1

"I had asthma and had bouts of sickness as a child, therefore was discouraged from being too sporty or active.

This led me to believe that I just was a bit weak and unfit, permanently.

A a teenager I was happy enough to go along with this persona - I guess I felt more comfortable drinking, smoking and listening to music than anything too active or “healthy”.

I always enjoyed dancing, but unfortunately only did it in a drunk night out way for most of my youth. When I turned 30 I took up dance and got more seriously into yoga and explored other movement practices.

It is something that I regret not exploring more when I was younger.

When I was around 10 or 11 years old, I used to dance alot at home. I’d put on the music of my favourite musicals and create elaborate free flowing dance routines.

It was only when I turned 30 that I allowed myself to properly explore things like yoga, dance, hiking, swimming and other movement.

It's been very therapeutic.

I realised that I could be fit, challenge myself, move my body, and enjoy it, and still be ‘me’."
